Two antique pseudoscience books on Phrenology and Physiognomy including: 'Essays on Physiognomy' translated and written in german by J.C. Lavater and "Abridged from M. Holcroft's translation, and printed in Boston, Mass. "for David Spotswood and David West" bearing the inscription, "A.b. Ferguson Cincinnati 1814" to top center of title page; and 'Self Instructor in Phrenology and Physiology' by O.S. and L.N. Fowler, featuring "One Hundred Engravings, and A Chart of The Character", printed in New York, New York in 1857. Text excerpt from reads, "Your head is the type of your mentality. Self-knowledge is the essence of all knowledge." Physiognomy book in leather cover with embossed gilt spine title, and Phrenology book in embossed cloth cover with gilt cover text. New England, America, early to mid-19th century.
