Tom Duncan (born 1939) is a Scottish-born American sculptor known for intricate, mixed-media cabinets and dioramas that explore childhood memories of World War II, often featuring themes of fear, fantasy, and trauma. His work combines detailed woodworking, often resembling altars or theaters, with personal, autobiographical scenes. Duncan is an original tenant at Westbeth Artists Housing in New York and worked for the New York Port Authority building architectural models. Duncan chosen medium is a combination of discarded toys, figurines, and mechanical parts to create detailed scenes, with some pieces taking over 25 years to complete. His work has been featured at the Andrew Edlin Gallery and the American Visionary Art Museum. Duncan’s recent exhibitions include Tom Duncan: …It Isn’t Even Past (2023) and Portrait of Tom with a Migraine Headache (2014) at Andrew Edlin Gallery, New York, Dedicated to Coney Island at The Armory Show, New York (2008), Super-Rough (curated by Takashi Murakami) at Outsider Art Fair, New York (2019), and The Visionary Experience: Saint Francis to Finster at American Visionary Art Museum, Baltimore (2013). He was the recipient of the 2001 Robert Rauschenberg Changes Inc. and American Academy of Arts and Letters, Artists and Writers Grants.
