Sanford Mason (American, 1798–1862), portrait of a Miss Wheeler. Oil on unlined canvas with original stretcher. Inscribed "Miss Wheeler Ae20 S. Mason Pinx. June 1832," on top stretcher. Label with provenance on verso. New England, 1832.
Mason began as a sign painter in Providence, Rhode Island before establishing himself as a portrait artist. He maintained a studio in Boston and exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum from 1826-1828, working primarily in Boston, Lowell, and Philadelphia throughout his career, with frequent moves between Boston, Providence, and Philadelphia during his final two decades.
