About The Artist: Richard Hambleton (1952–2017) was a Canadian street artist best known for his pioneering role in the rise of urban art in the 1980s. Born in Vancouver and raised in Edmonton, he first gained attention in the late 1970s with his provocative “Mass Murder” series—chalk outlines of bodies splashed with paint, installed in public spaces to shock passersby. After moving to New York City, Hambleton became known for his iconic “Shadowman” figures—life-sized, black-painted silhouettes that appeared on walls throughout the Lower East Side. Alongside contemporaries like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, he helped shape the early street art movement.Though his career was marked by both critical acclaim and personal struggles, Hambleton’s work has been reassessed in recent years, solidifying his legacy as a key figure in the evolution of contemporary street art.
