Raúl Anguiano (Mexican, 1915–2006), "El Cedro," April 30, 1949. Pencil on paper, side profile of a figure; inscribed lower left "Kayóme [?]Catanga[?] / El Cedro, April 30–1949" (transcription approximate, cursive inscription partially illegible); inscribed upper right in the artist's hand "carne color café / pelo negro / [illegible]," color notations indicating brown skin and black hair. Executed during Anguiano's landmark 1949 Lacandona jungle expedition, during which he served as the official artist accompanying the team that discovered the Mayan fresco murals at Bonampak; the subject is likely a member of the Lacandón Maya community encountered at El Cedro.

About the Artist: Raúl Anguiano was a central figure in the third generation of Mexican muralists, working in the tradition of Rivera, Orozco, and Siqueiros while expanding into easel painting, drawing, printmaking, and ceramics across a career spanning seven decades. A co-founder of the Taller de Gráfica Popular and the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, he was selected in 1949 as the official artist of the landmark Lacandona jungle expedition that uncovered the Mayan fresco murals at Bonampak, an experience that profoundly shaped his subsequent work. His paintings and works on paper are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Museum of Art in Mexico City, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among others.
