Philip Guston (Canadian/American, 1913–1980), group of four works on paper. Three ink drawings on yellow legal pad paper depicting signature late-period motifs including hooded ghost figures, boots, and hands, one initialed "PG"; together with one ink drawing on paper inscribed "THANKS A BUNCH PEEEZE!" at the top; and one framed exhibition announcement for Philip Guston Paintings 1976, David McKee Gallery, 140 East 63rd Street, New York, March 6–April 10, 1976, signed in pencil "for David Pease / Warmly, Philip Guston."

About The Artist: Philip Guston began his career as a muralist and figurative painter in Los Angeles before moving to New York, where he became a celebrated member of the Abstract Expressionist movement in the 1950s alongside de Kooning and Pollock. In 1970, he shocked the art world by abandoning abstraction entirely, exhibiting raw, cartoonish figurative paintings at the Marlborough Gallery that drew widespread critical hostility but proved enormously influential on subsequent generations of painters. His late work, produced from 1968 until his death in 1980, is defined by a recurring cast of symbolic imagery, hooded Klan figures, disembodied boots and hands, light bulbs, and cigarettes, all rooted in his Jewish immigrant upbringing, his political convictions, and his unflinching examination of complicity and violence in American life. Today Guston is regarded as one of the most important American artists of the twentieth century, with work in the collections of MoMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Tate Modern, and the Centre Pompidou, among others.
