Paul Humphrey (1931–1999) was an American outsider artist based in Vermont, known for his prolific series of drawings called "Sleeping Beauties". After a career in manual labor and a stroke at the age of 57 that left him in a wheelchair, he began creating hundreds of intimate, dreamlike portraits of women with closed eyes. Humphrey used magazines, newspapers, and catalogs to find images of women. He would photocopy these, then intensely rework them with white-out tape and other media to close their eyes and alter their features. His work has been featured in collections such as the American Folk Art Museum. His art has also been shown in galleries specializing in outsider art, including Delmes & Zander and in exhibitions including Art Basel, Switerland.
