Portrait miniature of a gentleman, attributed to Jeremiah Theus (South Carolina/Swiss, 1716–1774). Bust-length, facing three-quarters left, with brown hair and a subtle smile, on a blue gradient ground. Watercolor on ivory, oval format. Unsigned. Housed in its original period oval 18K gold bezel-set pendant frame with an openwork scalloped outer border. Charleston, South Carolina, circa 1755–1774. XRF testing of the mount indicates 75% gold content, consistent with 18K gold.
Measurements: Bezel gold frame: H 1-1/8 in. W 7/8 in.
About the Artist: Born in Chur, Switzerland, Jeremiah Theus emigrated with his family to South Carolina in the 1730s and was working as a portrait painter in Charleston by 1740. For most of the next three decades he faced little serious competition there, painting members of the colony's leading families, including the Manigaults and Mottes, in both oil and watercolor on ivory. He died in Charleston in 1774.
Excellent original condition. Some minor surface imperfections to gold mount, likely from previous gold testing.
