Italo Scanga (Italian/American, 1932–2001), three works on paper, comprising: "Fly to Sicily" artist proof, signed and numbered 7/73 lower right; "Letter," ink on wove paper, dated 3/73, numbered 8/20, signed lower right, titled in graphite bottom center; and one untitled work on a flattened Tetley tea box, signed lower right, dated 1973.

About the Artist: Italo Scanga was born in Lago, Calabria, Italy in 1932 and emigrated to the United States in 1949, studying at Michigan State University before establishing himself as a leading figure in American assemblage and mixed media work. He was a close friend and collaborator of glass artist Dale Chihuly, and taught for decades at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and later at the University of California San Diego, where he was an influential teacher. His work drew on Italian folk traditions, religious iconography, and everyday found objects including bottles, sticks, printed matter, domestic detritus and more, of which he assembled into constructions that straddled folk art, Dadaism, and postwar American assemblage. Scanga exhibited widely throughout his career, with work in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and numerous other institutions.

Condition

Smaller work in overall excellent condition, larger "Letter" and "Sicily" works with imperfections to paper commensurate with age including some minor discoloration/foxing.
