Irene Chou (Chinese, 1924-2011) was born in Shanghai and graduated from St. John's University in 1945 before settling in Hong Kong in 1949. Initially trained in the traditional Lingnan school under Zhao Shao'ang, her work transformed in the late 1960s when she studied with Lui Shou-kwan, leading to her breakthrough into modernist abstraction. During the 1970s, Chou developed her signature "piled ink" technique, creating dark, complex compositions that drew viewers into contemplative psychological spaces. Her later works from the 1980s onward became increasingly bold and energetic, exploring themes of primordial creation, cosmic vision, and rebirth through organic, feminine imagery. Chou's paintings represent a significant bridge between traditional Chinese ink painting and contemporary abstract expressionism, and her work is held in major international collections.
