Volume 4 absent. Extra Illustrated with Contemporaneously Engraved Portraits of Prominent Persons Mentioned in this History. Several folding maps. The extra illustrated page is signed by the author. Bound in 3/4 red leather with cloth covers. Raised bands on spines with gold tooled decorations and lettering. Moire marbled end papers. Bound by H.C. Mason of Boston (a 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" sheet  of Important instructions from the binder is included). This is the seminal work on arguably the most crucial period of American history since the Revolutionary War, with ramifications extending to the present day.

Condition

It looks like these volumes (except maybe volume 1) have never been opened. The hinges are as tight as the day they came from the binder. Also, there are pencil codes on each portrait, possibly in the hand of the author. A fine set, with only the lightest wear on the high spots.
