Thomas Hardy's Works. The Wessex Novels. 18 volumes. Osgood, McIlvaine, and Co. London 1895-97. Except volume 18 is Macmillan and Co., Ltd. St. Martins Street London 1913. With a preface by Hardy dated 1913. All are bound in 3/4 green Morocco by Hatchard 187 Piccadilly. Spines are separated into five panels with raised bands. Elaborate gilt tooling to each panel, and two spine labels per volume. Pale marbled end sheets. Top edge gilt. 8vo. (H 8 in. W 6 in.) First Edition of this original 16 volume set with two supplemental volumes, all bound to match. Bookplate for Frances Evelyn Countess of Warwick in each volume. An excellent and scarce set.
Condition
Excellent condition, with only the smallest bits of wear. Great corners, light toning. Fore edge and bottom of text block with occasional spots. Spines with typical sun fading from green to brown. Volume 18 with small scratch to bottom leather triangle on front cover. One would be hard pressed to find this set in this condition.
