19 volumes of works by Bronte, Eliot, Hugo, Pepys, and Lucas. The Bronte set consists of seven volumes published in London by Smith, Elder, & Co. 1887-8. 5 volumes by Charlotte Bronte, 1 volume by Anne Bronte, and one Life of Charlotte Bronte by Mrs. Gaskell. Bound in 3/4 leather with marbled boards and end sheets. small 8vo. The Novels of George Eliot in 7 volumes (of 8) published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London n.d. (1880's). Lacks volume 4. Illustrated. Bound in 3/4 blue leather with moirè marbled boards and end papers. small 8vo. The Diary of Samuel Pepys in two volumes. London: Dent 1939 impression. Bound by Baynton (Reviere) in 3/4 blue-grey leather with marbled boards and end papers. Top edge gilt. Unopened. Hugo, Victor. Notre-Dame du Paris. Paris Hetzel & Quentin. n.d. From the Complete Works of Hugo. 2 vols, bound in red pebble leather with decorated paper boards. small 8vo. E.V. Lucas A Wanderer in Florence. Thirteenth Edition. London: Methuen & Co. Ltd. 1925. Bound in full red leather by Sangorski and Sutcliffe London England. Covers and edges ruled in gilt. Inner dentelles. Spine with raised bands to form 6 panels, 4 with gilt decorations and 2 with spine labels. End papers are heavy stock paper with beautifully patterned dots, some gilt to form a central panel. 8 vo.
All volumes are approximately 7 in. tall.
Condition
Condition varies between titles. The Lucas volume is in excellent condition, a very light damp stain to covers. The Bronte is in about good condition, Volume 5 lacks the front cover, others with loose boards and some with moderate spine chipping and loss. The Eliot with significant wear, some spine fraying and chipping, most hinges with some cracks and splits, the last volume with some pulling away from the spine. Pepys Diary leather has faded some to both vols. Front cover to Vol 1 is almost off, rear cover with split hinge (holding). Vol 2 is much better. Hugo is in good condition, with wear and soiling to covers, some loose pages internally, and some overall soiling and toning to pages
