Rare F. B. Norton stump umbrella stand with recumbent dog (Terrier). Salt-glazed molded stoneware with stamp. Worcester, MA, circa 1886.
Background: According to Kevin Daughney, company historian for The Norton Co. in Worcester, MA, from 1980-1999, few umbrella stands of this form were made. Seven were made circa 1886 as parting gifts for the seven Worcester residents who purchased the grinding wheel division from potter, Frank Norton. When the division was relocated from the pottery to the north end of Worcester, the seven umbrella stands were presented to the division's new owners. The exact number of terrier umbrella stands that were ever produced by the F.B. Norton Pottery is currently unknown.
