Carroll, Lewis. Alice's Adventures In Wonderland. With Forty-Two Illustrations By John Tenniel. New York D. Appleton And Co., 445, Broadway. 1866. Macmillan first printed this book in England in 1865 but recalled it. John Tenniel, the illustrator, considered the printing of the illustrations unsatisfactory. Eventually Carroll authorized Macmillan to sell 1,952 bound copies to Appleton in New York. A new title page was printed, replacing "London Macmillan" with "New York D. Appleton" and dated 1866. The new title page was tipped onto the excised stub of the Macmillan 1865 edition. The title page in this book has been tipped onto a stub. It is in the original red cloth, embossed and gilt binding. The inner rear hinge with some splits. The outer rear hinge is split, with some small loss to the spine edge. The front hinge is starting, but sound. There is wear to the edges, the corners are bumped with some loss. The spine has light wear to the top and bottom. There is a book plate attached to the inside front cover, and a note pinned to the rear free end sheet, identifying this as a first American edition. All edges are gilt. The text block is solid and clear. The title page has a small scuff-like tear just above "Alice's", hardly noticable. We note that in this copy, at least to our eyes, the illustrations appear to be just fine.
